Designing  the Bicycle-Friendly City: An Introduction

This one-day course introduces participants to the basics of good bicycle infrastructure design. It explains how cyclists benefit a city, how a bicycle culture can be built and what the foundations of successful bicycle infrastructure are. In the afternoon, we test the quality of the bicycle infrastructure at KU campus and identify the shortcomings of Bangkok’s current bicycle policies and infrastructure. Participants will then have a chance to share experiences and seek answers to questions they struggle with in the field. The course applies state-of-the-art bicycle knowledge from the world’s most bicycle-friendly country (the Netherlands) and enables participants to more effectively contribute to making Bangkok (or any other place) more bicycle-friendly.

Designing the Bicycle-Friendly City: Comprehensive, 4-day Course

Cities around the world discover that promoting cycling is a relatively low-cost way to mitigate urban traffic congestion and improve the quality of life in towns and cities. People cycle more if the bicycle infrastructure is better. Designing bicycle-friendly infrastructure, however, is not easy and much public money goes wasted on poorly designed bicycle infrastructure. Designing good cycling-inclusive infrastructure requires a thorough understanding of what cyclists need. It also requires good knowledge of the various design and other instruments that can be employed to accommodate these needs. This comprehensive design course delivers exactly that. It familiarizes participants with all aspects of bicycle infrastructure design using state-of-the-art bicycle knowledge from the world’s most bicycle-friendly country (the Netherlands). Upon completion, participants will be capable of identifying what measures are needed to create bicycle-friendly spaces, and know how to design, implement and sustain them.
